Opinion on verge parking, street widths and the increase in parking fines:

“Planning chair Christian Dickson said planning mistakes had been made both in minimum street width for single-lot subdivisions and in minimum parking requirements for multi-residential developments.

“He said councillors were now discussing policy changes to fix the issue which would require both wider street widths for new subdivisions and an increase in minimum parking requirements for multi-unit development.”

Opinion on verge parking, street widths and the increase in parking fines:

“Does it feel like Sunshine Coast parking officers are driving around the region looking for people they can slap with a fine?

One Sunshine Coast councillor says this isn’t the case.

“They are not driving around looking for issues”, Cr Ted Hungerford said.

He said the spate of fines issued in the past few weeks, which have sparked an online petition and protests, were in “response to complaints”.

And the parking officers were providing warnings in new areas first.

“Where council receives a complaint in a location they have not been before, the regulated parking team issues warnings and provides fact sheets for a period of two weeks,” Cr Hungerford said.

“Once that two weeks has expired, we issue an infringement.”

Opinion on verge parking, street widths and the increase in parking fines:

“Mr Gerhard was fined for parking his car in his own driveway. The fine stated his car blocked access “to and from a driveway or other way of access to or from adjacent land”.
A council spokesperson said it was State Government’s law – but the council was legally required to enforce it.
However, Cr Jamieson said Mr Gerhard had the opportunity to park in his garage.
“If he is using that garage for other purposes, he should have looked for safe alternative carparking opportunities.” ”

“Mayor Mark Jamieson said the council would hold a workshop for not only residents, but council officers and emergency services to address the issue.
He said he and his fellow councillors had acknowledged there was “significant community commentary” surrounding the organisation’s approach to parking fines.
“While council has a legal responsibility to enforce the law on behalf of the community, I have requested a workshop be held early in the new year as this matter is generating community concern,” Cr Jamieson said.
“This will provide an opportunity for the councillors and officers to establish an agreed approach that is in the best interests of our region.”
Acting CEO Warren Bunker said he told council officers to “take a common sense approach” when issuing parking infringements and fines.
“Council is responsible for regulating parking under State Government legislation and we are obliged to follow up and investigate all complaints received,” he said.
Mr Bunker said council vehicles were subject to the same laws as the community and if parked illegally, a council worker could expect to be issued with an infringement.”

Jarrod Bleijie, State Govt.

Opinion on verge parking, street widths and the increase in parking fines:
Google directed me to the Unmuzzled video interview.
He makes it quite clear that development approvals rest with Council and they most certainly can request wider roads.
He also states that Council wants narrower roads to achieve higher rates revenue.  He also lives in a rabbit warren suburb where they all park on the verge and stated he will support allowing verge parking.

Mark McArdle, Caloundra MP
Opinion on verge parking, street widths and the increase in parking fines:
He believes what the Council is doing is merely revenue raising.
https://www.frasercoastchronicle.com.au/news/councillors-residents-mp-say-parking-blitz-gone-to/3290805/

“Caloundra MP Mark McArdle pointed out the council’s own legislation that read: “Council may issue warnings or fines where appropriate. Please provide as much information as possible and we will assess the effective solution.” –https://www.sunshinecoastdaily.com.au/news/councillors-residents-mp-say-parking-blitz-gone-to/3290805/

“He said this legislation was clearly at council’s discretion to take whatever action they liked.
“In my opinion, the council has thrown that document out the window and are simply raising revenue,” he said.
“The reality is that for a person to contest the ticket they will need to take council to court to have the matter determined by a Magistrate. The costs in time and/or money are prohibitive and if the person loses they also cop court fees on top of the fine.
“The costs in time and/or money are prohibitive and if the person loses they also cop court fees on top of the fine.”
He said the council should “pull the fines” and “act within the spirit of what the legislation was intended to achieve”.
“We live at a time when blocks of land are much smaller than 20 to 30 years ago, roads are narrower and driveways are also shorter,” he said.
“Whatever you do, don’t let your children leave their scooters on the driveway beyond the boundary line.”
